CHAPTER 31 – EMERGENCY RETREAT

“Finally, I’m going to get my hands on the Trynx 3 ore, and nothing can interfere with that now.” Creeksto thinks to himself, standing on his bridge, hands behind his back, observing the boarding operations. His ship one of two providing cover for the ship docked with the Neptune One.

Suddenly, without warning, an Earth Defense Force battle group drops out of FTL on the opposite side of the Neptune One and immediately opens fire on the docked Sulari ship.

The illusion of success shattered, Creeksto’s blood pressure skyrockets, turning his face dark green. His eyes bulging, he thunders, “SON OF A BITCH! WHERE DID THEY COME FROM?”

Missile after missile impacts and explodes, destroying the Sulari ship’s engines and the starboard side laser cannons. The force of the explosions exerts enough force to break the docking seal and separate the two ships. Creeksto sees several Sulari sucked out into the vacuum of space before the computers can close the docking ports. The Sulari ship has sustained major damage and is now drifting and spinning out of control. Clearly, they were not able to raise their shields.

“COMMS, SIGNAL THE OTHER SHIP, EMERGENCY RETREAT!”

“YES, CAPTAIN!”

“HELM, GET US THE HELL OUT OF HERE, NOW!”

“YES, CAPTAIN!”

The tactical officer yells, “CAPTAIN, WHAT ABOUT OUR DISABLED SHIP? WE CAN’T JUST LEAVE…”

Cutting him off, Creeksto points at the EDF ships and roars, “DO YOU NOT SEE THAT BATTLE GROUP? IF WE DON’T LEAVE NOW, WE’LL ALL DIE! WE CAN’T TAKE ON A FORCE OF THAT SIZE, YOU IDIOT!”

The helmsmen on the two Sulari ships execute their orders, quickly turning the ships and jumping into FTL.

Creeksto walks back to his chair, slams his fist down on the armrest and yells, “DAMN IT!” Desperate to assign blame for this disastrous failure, he turns to his tactical officer and hisses, “YOU!”

The tactical officer’s expression changes to one of panic and terror, “What? Who me? What did…”

“WHY DIDN’T YOU DETECT THEM APPROACHING IN FTL? OUR SENSORS WOULD HAVE DETECTED A FLEET OF THAT SIZE BEFORE THEY ARRIVED!”

“Captain, I was…”

Creeksto doesn’t even let him finish his sentence. He doesn’t want to hear his excuse. Quickly taking a step forward, he draws his blaster, aims, and pulls the trigger. A bright red blast discharges from the barrel, striking the tactical officer in the center of the chest. The blast turns the Sulari red and disintegrates him from the center out, as he screams in pain.

Holstering his blaster, he sits down in his chair, and says, “Second, take over the tactical station.”

“Yes, Captain.”

“Comms, signal the other ship to change course, head for home.”

“Yes, Captain.”

“Helm, change course for home. We need to regroup and formulate a new plan.”

“Yes, Captain.”
